The Oaxaca School emerged in the 1980s and 1990s as a leading center for fine art in Mexico, building on Oaxaca's renowned folk art tradition. These artists draw strength from native Indian culture, myths, and legends, employing a folk surrealism in which magic and unexpected imagery intersect. Their work is suffused with what poet Alberto Blanco identified as depictions of another time and place existing within our own—a space within another space, a time within another time. The eleven printmakers represented here—Juan Alcazar, Modesto Bernardo, Enrique Flores, Abelardo Lopez, Eddie Martinez, Leovigildo Martinez, Felipe Morales, Fernando Olivera, Cecilio Sanchez, Filemon Santiago, and Shinzaburo Takeda—exemplify the movement's vital energy and distinct visual language.
