A multi-disciplinary artist, musician, and draftsman working across drawing, photography, installation, performance, and design for over five decades, David Byrne develops his practice through bold yet sparing line work that transforms everyday objects into otherworldly, humorous compositions. Drawing became a primary focus during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when unconscious outpourings of images depicting bodies, dreams, nightmares, and urban scenes emerged as response to social and emotional isolation. His recent textile banners—hand-embroidered tapestries incorporating vintage trims and tassels—echo fraternal organization symbolism (Masons, Odd Fellows, Elks), combining traditional craft with contemporary imagery. Byrne cites Saul Steinberg's drawings as foundational inspiration, particularly their ability to transcend categorical boundaries and express ideas more effectively through visual form than through song.
