Irregularity: Corita and Immaculate Heart College's Rule Breaking Designs

Corita Kent led an innovative art program at Immaculate Heart College, pioneering experimental approaches to graphic design and visual communication. Her practice centered on the poetic and political potential of typography, letters, and words, explored across printed matter, artist books, and paintings. Working closely with students and faculty, she developed the Ten Rules of the art department, emphasizing trust, experimentation, self-discipline, and rule-breaking. Her published works Footnotes and Headlines (1967) and Damn Everything but the Circus (1970) demonstrate her commitment to using graphic design as a vehicle for meditations on freedom and social change.

Sister Magdalen Mary, known as "Sister Mag," served as Corita's mentor and editor-designer of the Irregular Bulletin (1956–1963). Her free-flowing, ebulliently anarchic visual style for the college newsletter became a highly influential precursor to punk and countercultural zine design. She shaped the visual language of Immaculate Heart College's communications, bringing wit and playful experimentation to institutional ephemera and establishing a design philosophy centered on creative liberation.

About

Irregularity examines the innovative graphic design and ephemera produced by Corita and the art department at Immaculate Heart College from 1956 to 1970. Featured are the Irregular Bulletin newsletter, Mary's Day celebration materials, and Corita's published works exploring political freedom through experimental typography and playful visual language. The exhibition traces how the college's anarchic design aesthetic directly influenced the self-published zine culture of punk and countercultural movements.
