Paintings

Peter Van Dyck was born in Philadelphia in 1978 and trained in painting and drawing at the Florence Academy of Art from 1998–2002, where he also taught from 2000–2002. He returned to Philadelphia in 2002 to establish his studio practice and has exhibited widely in group shows across Philadelphia, New York, and San Francisco. Van Dyck has held solo exhibitions at John Pence Gallery in San Francisco, Eleanor Ettinger Gallery in New York, The Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor, and Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia. Since 2003 he has taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, becoming an Assistant Professor in the Certificate/BFA program in 2011. American Artist Magazine named him one of 25 Important Artists of Tomorrow in 2012, and his work has appeared in publications including American Arts Quarterly, Art News, and International Artist Magazine. His practice centers on constructed spatial frameworks rendered in oil on linen mounted on panel. Van Dyck begins with an overarching spatial structure, establishing a unified field before introducing objects within measured shifts in perspective. His work investigates interiors, still lifes, and thresholds through subtle curvature and formal relationships, prioritizing what a painting does rather than what it says.
