A Window Into Something Else

John Moore (b. 1941) was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and spent much of his career in Philadelphia. A celebrated figure in American realism, Moore creates oil paintings that merge precise observational rendering with subtle illusionistic effects. His work captures still lifes, landscapes, and architectural subjects with a poetic sensibility, revealing the extraordinary within the mundane through careful attention to light, form, and spatial relationships. Moore spent over four decades teaching at major institutions, including serving as Gutman Professor of Fine Arts and chair of the painting department at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as leading graduate programs at Boston University and Tyler School of Art. His paintings are held in major museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has exhibited with Locks Gallery continuously since 1976 and was elected to the National Academy of Design, receiving multiple honors from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
