Christo: Air

Transparent polyethylene air-packages, rope-tight ceilings.

Christo built a practice around staging absence—making invisible ideas legible through carefully engineered packaging, wrapping, and enclosure. Working through plans and scaled concepts that often became physical installations, he treated containment as a method: an object’s “meaning” could come from the act of limiting space rather than from what the thing is. His projects connect intimate gestures to later works that scale up to buildings, landmarks, and public space.

Jeanne-Claude co-developed the logistical and spatial thinking that allowed Christo’s wrapped-air ideas to become workable realities. Together, she and Christo refined methods for enclosing and suspending materials—translating a conceptual focus on perception into installations that depend on scale, timing, and audience movement. Their early experiments with transparent packages and rope binding became the foundation for later interventions at environmental breadth.
