David Byrne was raised in Baltimore and studied photography, performance, and video production at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) after briefly attending the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1975 he co-founded Talking Heads, which introduced innovative visual approaches to performance in the 1980s. Since college, Byrne has worked across drawing, photography, installation, performance, and design, publishing and exhibiting since the 1990s. His visual practice, like his music, transforms ordinary elements into iconic ones and challenges fundamental notions of what can be classified as art.
