Visual Artist AIRspace Residency 2027–2028
The opportunity
Abrons Arts Center's 20-month studio residency for a cohort of three early-career visual artists, running January 2027 through August 2028 at its Lower East Side building. Each resident gets a semi-private studio in an open-plan layout (work producing strong fumes cannot be supported), an annual honorarium of $7,000, an annual materials stipend of $5,000, 30 hours of subsidized dance-studio time, studio visits with curators, professional development with the Arts Education department, and a monthly one-on-one with an artist mentor drawn from program alumni: Park McArthur, Baseera Khan, and Elliott Jerome Brown Jr. The residency ends in a group exhibition at Abrons in spring 2028. Applications go through Submittable; review runs through early November, with in-person interviews November 16–20 and invitations in December 2026.
Eligibility
Early-career visual artists (as Abrons defines it: actively making and sharing original work but with few prior opportunities to exhibit or take part in residencies; age and years of practice are not factors) living in the five boroughs of New York City at application and throughout the residency. Not enrolled in a degree program or a student during the residency. Must need physical studio space and be available for the required cohort programs.
