the opportunity
The Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico, running residencies in Taos since 1954, is accepting applications for its 2028 sessions: late January to late April (12 weeks), early June to mid-August (10 weeks), and mid-September to early December (12 weeks). Each artist in residence receives a rent-free, utility-paid, fully furnished casita on the foundation campus, with a commons house, library, laundry, and bicycles; residents cover their own food and transportation, and a no-work policy bars employment in Taos during the session. The foundation places no expectations or quotas on the work made. Applications, online or by mail, consist of the form, five work samples with names redacted, and the fee; playwrights may also opt into the Chesley/Bumbalo Award. If selected, a $300 deposit is required, half refundable. Residencies were paused in 2026 for campus renovations, so 2028 is the next cycle offered.
eligibility
Visual artists (painters, illustrators, photographers, sculptors, filmmakers, ceramicists, and others), literary artists (writers, poets, playwrights, screenwriters), and music composers and songwriters, from the United States or abroad.
fees
$30 application fee, no waivers; $300 deposit if selected (half retained for casita upkeep, half a refundable damage deposit)
