the opportunity
The Arts & Science Council, which runs the public art programs for the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, is seeking qualifications for a commission at Bryant Park, the oldest park on Charlotte's west side and a WPA-era local historic landmark now undergoing a major renovation and expansion across Stewart Creek with a new skatepark, greenway extension, and pathways. The project budget is $130,492, covering all artist fees, design, engineering, fabrication, permitting, installation, travel, insurance, and taxes. The county wants a distinctive landmark for the Lover's Leap area that celebrates local stories, folklore, and community identity and invites visitor interaction. A selection panel of local and national arts professionals and community stakeholders will shortlist and interview three finalists in October–November 2026, with a contract executed in December. Qualifications are submitted through SlideRoom with images, annotations, and three references.
eligibility
U.S.-based professional artists or artist teams with experience managing, designing, and completing public art commissions in the past ten years; architects must have completed at least three public art projects in the last five years. Artists who received an ASC commission or purchase over $25,000 in the last three years, and ASC, County, City, and Public Art Commission staff and their families, are ineligible.
