Open Interval: Turbulence
the opportunity
The Simons Foundation's Open Interval program funds trios of an artist, a scientist, and an arts organization to spend April through December 2027 in open-ended collaboration around a shared scientific theme, this cycle 'turbulence.' Each selected trio receives a $30,000 grant and joins a national cohort with a required collaboration meeting May 23–26, 2027 and other touchpoints. No proposed project or end product is required; the program deliberately supports sustained exploration rather than production or exhibition. Applications must come from a complete trio. Finalists are interviewed virtually November 30–December 17, and all applicants are notified January 15, 2027. Webinars on September 25 and October 5 answer questions about the call.
eligibility
Trios regionally co-located anywhere in the United States who can collaborate in person: an artist with substantial exhibiting experience who makes large-scale or public work (performance, installation, participatory work, sound art, dance) and wants to work with a scientist; a scientist holding a Ph.D. or equivalent actively doing basic research at a university or research institution; and an arts organization willing to steward the collaboration.
