Master Artist and Apprentice Grant in Traditional Native Arts (Dec 1 deadline)
Alaska State Council on the Arts
You should apply if you're an Alaskan 18 or older studying a traditional Alaska Native art form with a recognized Master Artist.
About
The Alaska State Council on the Arts funds apprenticeships that carry on traditional Alaska Native art forms. An apprentice applies for serious study with a recognized Master Artist; grants usually do not exceed $2,000 and need no match. Funds cover the Master Artist's fee, part of the raw materials, and travel essential to the apprenticeship, but not tools, equipment, tuition or credit. Applications include a lesson plan, work samples and two letters of recommendation each for apprentice and master. Deadlines are quarterly; this listing is the December 1 round, and awards are made at the following Council meeting.
Eligibility
Apprentice and Master Artist must both be 18 or older and meet Alaska residency requirements. The apprentice must have a Master Artist willing to teach, show experience in the art form, and not be a full-time student during the grant. Priority goes to study within the apprentice's own cultural traditions; immediate-family pairs qualify only in limited cases.
Applications happen on Alaska State Council on the Arts's website. Seeke reviews and indexes the listing but does not accept applications.
