About
Jack Straw Cultural Center, the Northwest's nonprofit audio arts center in Seattle's University District, awards up to eight artists a year twenty hours of recording and production time in its professional studios with a Jack Straw engineer, plus training and presentation through artist events, podcasts, and other venues. Running since 1994, the program has supported writers, choreographers, multidisciplinary artists, theatre sound designers, radio producers, filmmakers, visual artists, and composers of every genre; twelve more artists receive matching studio-time awards through the Artist Assistance Program. An interdisciplinary peer panel selects the residents. There is no cash compensation beyond an occasional small honorarium; the value is the studio, engineering, and development time. Applications go through Submittable, and Jack Straw runs application workshops and Instagram Live sessions with past residents in October. Awardees are notified in February 2027.
Eligibility
Emerging and established artists of any discipline whose project proposal includes sound as a major component, regardless of prior audio experience. One application per person per year, to only one Jack Straw program; past participants must wait one year to reapply to the same program. Remote collaboration is possible for artists outside Seattle when physical presence is not required.
