About
The American Academy in Rome awards the Rome Prize to about thirty artists and scholars each year, across disciplines including visual arts, design, architecture, literature and musical composition. Winners live at the Academy with a bedroom, private bath and private workspace, and receive weekday lunch and dinner through the Rome Sustainable Food Project. Full-term fellowships run from early September to the following June and carry a $30,000 stipend; half-term fellowships carry $16,000. Applicants submit an online application in English following the guidelines for their discipline, including letters of recommendation (due November 30), and must explain why the work needs to be done in Rome. The early deadline is November 1; applications are accepted through November 15 at a higher fee.
Eligibility
United States citizens at the time of application, except the Environmental Arts & Humanities prize and certain postdoctoral humanities fellowships, which also accept foreign nationals who have lived in the U.S. for the three years before the deadline. Undergraduates and previous Rome Prize winners are not eligible; humanities graduate students must be ABD. Winners may not hold a full-time job during the term.
