About

Sound Scene is an annual sound-art festival held indoors and outdoors at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. The 2027 edition, June 5 and 6, takes the theme Sounds of the City and is looking for interactive installations, live performances and small-group workshops about city life and the sounds that define it. Work does not have to be audio-only; multimedia and multi-sensory proposals are common. Each accepted artist or group receives an honorarium of $500 to $1,500 depending on the work, but travel and lodging are not covered. Proposals are reviewed by the festival's Creative Advisory Committee and must follow Hirshhorn policies.

Eligibility

Open to artists of any experience level or discipline, and not limited to DC residents. Artists must be at least 18 at the time of the festival or apply with an adult partner, and must be on site (or send someone) for set-up and both festival days.

Applications happen on Sound Scene's website. Seeke reviews and indexes the listing but does not accept applications.
