About

Smack Mellon's Artist Studio Program gives six early-career New York City artists an eleven-month residency, September 8, 2027 to August 8, 2028. Each artist gets a free private studio of 250 to 300 square feet in Smack Mellon's Dumbo building with 24-hour access, use of shared production facilities, a stipend when funding allows, regular studio visits with New York curators and public open studios. No living space is provided. Applicants submit up to 10 images, or 2 videos plus 5 images, with image descriptions through Submittable. A panel of artists and arts professionals selects the cohort, with notifications in May 2027 after finalist interviews.

Eligibility

Emerging or early-career visual artists, generally within the first 2 to 10 years of a public career and without solo shows at widely recognized galleries or institutions. Must be legal New York City residents who have filed NYC taxes for at least one year before the deadline and live in NYC through the residency. Collectives of up to 3 with an established joint practice may apply. Artists on visas, including O-1, are not accepted, and applicants cannot hold another studio residency at the same time.

Applications happen on Smack Mellon's website. Seeke reviews and indexes the listing but does not accept applications.
