About
The Sanford Underground Research Facility in the Black Hills offers an artist residency inspired by its physics laboratory 4,850 feet underground. The residency has two parts: a four-week on-site visit in summer 2027 and a one-week return in the fall to install an exhibition and give up to two lectures. SURF covers airfare or mileage, housing and per diem for both visits, plus studio space and tours of the surface and underground facilities.
Eligibility
Artists must complete SURF safety training, be comfortable working in dark and wet underground spaces, and be able to walk on uneven ground for at least a mile.
