New Native Narratives 2027 Open Call
The FRONT Arte y Cultura (Casa Familiar)
You should apply if you're an emerging artist in the San Diego–Tijuana region exploring Indigenous identity, territory or memory.
About
The FRONT Arte y Cultura, Casa Familiar's gallery in San Ysidro, selects 10 emerging artists for New Native Narratives, a paid program built around Indigenous perspectives from Baja California, California and the surrounding region. Each participant receives a $1,000 stipend. The program runs as 12 hybrid Thursday evening sessions from March 4 to May 27, 2027, with mentors including Johnny Bear Contreras and Weshoyot Alvitre, and requires 90% attendance. Participants develop a project from concept to finished work, and the work goes into a group exhibition at The FRONT that opens July 10, 2027. Applicants email a submission form, a portfolio link and a letter of intent of about 300 words.
Eligibility
Emerging artists 18 and older from San Diego, Tijuana and Indigenous Nations, working in any visual or contemporary medium. Affiliation with a specific Indigenous group or nation is not required, and an extensive professional track record is not expected.
