Racoon River Valley Trail Underpass Lighting Project
City of Waukee Public Art
You should apply if you're a public artist or team with at least two completed commissions of $25,000 or more and you work with light, shadow or sound.

About
The City of Waukee Public Arts Program is commissioning a permanent artwork that uses light, shadow or sound inside the pedestrian and bicycle underpass near NW 20th Street and Douglas Parkway, on the Racoon River Valley Trail. The tunnel is 12 by 10 feet and 164 feet long. The budget is up to $30,000 and covers design, materials, site preparation, fabrication, installation and maintenance. The seven-member Waukee Public Art Advisory Commission reviews submissions and names three finalists, who each receive a $500 stipend to refine their proposal before a final interview. Applicants email 1–4 color sketches, a letter of interest, a resume, three references and 3–5 recent work samples. Finalists are announced November 20, 2026, and the project is due for completion in summer 2027.
Eligibility
Artists or artist teams who have completed two commissioned indoor or outdoor public artworks of at least $25,000 each, show an understanding of Waukee's character, and can join a virtual interview if needed. No travel costs are covered for site visits before selection.
Applications happen on City of Waukee Public Art's website. Seeke reviews and indexes the listing but does not accept applications.
